Identifying the direction of the resin flow front is important for liquid composite molding (LCM) process optimization and quality control of produced composite components. Currently, only sensor array, i.e., a group of sensors deployed in a certain geometry pattern, can satisfy this requirement, but the complexity of the monitoring systems increase the use cost. In this work, a novel dielectric sensor consisting of two top electrodes with designed patterns and a shared bottom electrode (such as carbon fabric) is developed. Based on the variation of the recorded capacitance curves and their derivatives, the direction of resin flow front can be identified by different signal characteristics with an error of less than 3.61 %. This novel design allows the monitoring of the resin flow direction to be realized by a single sensor, reducing the number of sensors/electrodes and simplifying the monitoring system.
